The irony of the Brasher Boot Company is, that despite a somewhat fusty, traditional, red-socked image, it's always been one of the more innovative brands in the UK market. The original idea of taking the slip-lasted running construction and EVA cushioning from running shoes and applying them to the walking boot market produced one of the most comfortable lowland walking boots ever. More recently, boots like the innovative SupaLight, which we always manage to spell wrongly - in fact it's Supalite - moved the lightweight leather boot goalposts somewhere into the terraces and the Traklite shoes work very well. Now with founder Chris Brasher gone and a new range of more contemporary-looking products in the wings, the company is about to overhaul its image to reflect a more modern feel. The result is the new logo above, light years away from the old one, which featured Chris Brasher's signature in an oval frame. The word is pretty much self-explanatory, the image at the end is actually a stylised representation of a pebble. On top of that, the big mouthfull of words that was 'The Brasher Boot Company' is being consigned to the dustbin and replaced with the single word, 'SuperHardRock'. Just joking, the company will simply be known as 'Brasher'. It's a bold move and one that'll take time to work we reckon, but ultimately a step in the right direction and one that may expand the cross section of people who'll consider using what's actually a very good product. But both Bo and Renate will of course remain active in the company and carry on with product development and their work at the board. In 1989, Bert and John Jacobs designed their first tee shirt. They knew nothing about the business.

For five years, the brothers hawked tee shirts in the streets of Boston and traveled the East Coast, selling door-to-door in college dormitories.

They collected some good stories, but were not very prosperous. They lived on peanut butter and jelly, slept in their van, and showered when they could.

Chicks were not impressed.

By the Fall of 1994, heading home from a long, less-than-fruitful roadtrip, Bert and John were desperately searching for answers to keep the dream alive. Little did they know, the only answer they needed was back in Boston, hanging up on their apartment wall.

Jake’s contagious grin, simple as it was, seemed to express everything the Jacobs brothers believed in.

One fateful September day, they printed up 48 Jake shirts for a local street fair in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They laid the shirts out on their rickety card table. By noontime, all 48 of those tees were gone. A star was born.

Soon Jake was introduced to local retailers, and his simple message of optimism was embraced like nothing the brothers had ever seen. As demand for product soared, Jake’s team grew, and the Little Brand That Could began to spread across America.

Today, the New England based brand stays close to its roots, with an emphasis on humor and humility. Through Life is good Festivals, positive products, and a steady dose of ping pong, Jake’s crew does its best to keep the good vibes flowing.

MacPac

From its beginnings in a Christchurch family garage, Macpac has developed into one of the world’s most trusted manufacturers of top quality outdoor equipment and clothing. In 1973, 19-year-old Bruce McIntyre left university after a year of studying psychology, sociology and political science. His vision: Simply to make backpacks that were better and cheaper than what else was available.“I had no capital of my own, but my parents loaned me $2,000 to buy Charlie McCormick's brand (Macpac) and machinery, and they put up their house as collateral so I could secure a $700 overdraft from the bank.” Bruce started off with his own designs, and a spirit of collaboration. In 1975 a group of young men from the Canterbury Mountaineering Club (CMC) were heading into the South American Andes on an expedition at the time. According to Bruce, “I said I’d make them all backpacks if they’d work with me on the design.”

Kaspar Tanner laid the foundations of the company in 1862 with the establishment of his traditional ropeworks in Dintikon near Lenzburg. Fernand Petzl was only 17 years old in the 1930s when he discovered his passion for caving.
